As the titcular being, Dragoons play a large role in the game. Not only where Dragoons responsible for freeing Humans from Wingly subjugation 11,000 years ago, the entire playable cast is able to transform into these beings and with this power they take on the God of Destruction.

The White-Silver Dragoon Spirit was originally created before or during the Dragon Campaign. A Dragoon Spirit is the pure essence of a dragon's soul at the last moment of life. Shirley was the first to be recognized by this spirit and it is likely she killed a dragon to obtain it. Dragoons are often called the incarnations of dragons as they possess power that the original dragon used.
This spirit is given to Dart by Shirley so he may save Shana's life. However it turned out Shana was the next owner of the spirit. She continued to use it until she could no longer control its power. The spirit was then passed onto Miranda.
A Dragoon Spirit's source of power is the insanity humans make themselves enter in order to fight. However it is possible to be overwhelmed by this power. Only strong willed individuals can hope to control dragons. Dragoon Spirits can also only be used to their full capacity during conflict. It is difficult for a Dragoon to transform outside of battle. The spirit grants the Dragoon the ability to fly, cast magic and control dragons under its influence. It is also possible for a Dragoon to have a vassal dragon accompany them.
Dragoon Spirits attract one another and Dragoons will gather as a result. The first instance of this was during the Dragon Campaign. Afterwards the spirits vanished along with the Dragoons. The spirits only gather at times of great need and disappear as soon as they are finished their task. Dragoons possess the strength to take on gods and are the greatest weapon of humans.
miranda's awakening
"Hey! What's going on!? What is this stone!?"
Miranda received the White-Silver Dragoon Spirit after Shana rejected it in the Signet Sphere Room at Crystal Palace. Shana had been suspecting she was going to lose control over the spirit when she fainted in Furni. Because of this feeling, she isn't overly surprised when it occurs. Miranda has only heard about Dragoons from old stories and is overwhelmed at the idea she is something legendary.
Miranda desires to use this power to protect her country and learn the true fate Soa intended for Endiness. After learning about Shana's nature and the God of Destruction, Miranda decides to defeat the god in order to save the world from a fate of death.

The White-Silver Dragoon Spirit is a healing spirit. Any other Dragoon Spirit can draw power from it for healing. In theory, the spirit may have endless healing power that is only limited by the user's capabilities. Because of this affinity, the spirit is weak offensively. Both attack spells are relatively weak compared to the other dragoons.
Shana is able to use the spirit to cure herself of dragon poison as well as cure Kamuy when he goes berserk. The healing power of the spirit can be accessed when in human form as well as when Dragooned.
The spirit is also capable of opening a gate to Heaven in order to draw healing magic. There is some connection to the Moon that Never Sets and the stars as some of its spells draw power from them. Instead of physical arrows, the spirit allows arrows of light to be created that are much stronger.
Both Shirley and Miranda have the same armor, much like the other dragoons. Shana however possessed completely different armor than either of them. It is possible her powers as the Moon Child change the spirit and it took on a new form more suited to its bearer. Doel had different armor than the original owner but he wasn't particularly 'evil', especially since someone cannot force a Dragoon Spirit to recognize them. Albert and Lavitz both had differing armors. The spirits may simply change to accommodate their owner.
