Mother Miranda's mother wasn't an especially cruel woman but she did have many faults that led to the fallout of her family. Her husband was a lazy man who refused to work after an injury. Fed up with his alcoholism that ate up any money she earn, Miranda's mother started an affair with another man. Being overwhelmed by her family life, Miranda's mother started to beat Miranda and acted suspicious. One night she ran away leaving Miranda behind. Though she intended to return for Miranda, her husband wouldn't allow them to meet which caused Miranda to believe her mother had abandoned her. Miranda's mother loved roses and this imagery was imprinted to Miranda at a young age. Miranda associates roses with the same emotions as her mother. She finds them to be flashy objects that hurt people to find their own happiness. Miranda spent most of her life hating her mother and living in her own loneliness. Her mother directly shaped Miranda's personality into the frigid persona that most people encounter. Miranda's hate has influenced all her actions and is a driving force in her life.
Father Miranda's father was an alcoholic who had a chronic history of unemployment. At some point he married Miranda's mother and they had Miranda. However Miranda's mother earned all the money while he drank it away leaving the family starving. This eventually drove his wife into the arms of another man and she left one day without notice. Shortly after Miranda's father fell ill and he passed away leaving her an orphan. While he was not a good father in any sense of the word, Miranda still loved him simply because he was there for her. However Miranda was not aware her mother was trying to come back for her however Miranda's father would kick her out every time she tried. Her father may have simply been afraid of being alone or possibly was denying her mother just for revenge. Whatever the reason, Miranda still loved him for staying with her. At no point is it indicated he was abusive, another reason Miranda may love him more than her mother.
